Antique Victorian cheese dish with mouse and sea shells. Sterling silver. Made 1871 by Gorham Corporation and retailed by Shreve & Co.
Measurements: approximately 8 1/2 inches long and a little over 6 1/2 inches wide. Weighs 244 grams.
Body of the cheese dish in the form of a fanlike seashell, rounded, fluted and showing clear signs of gilding. The handle consists of a series of scrolling wires. At the join of handle to bowl a little mouse is scurrying. Beautifully modelled with very fine detail. A similarly naturalistic oak leaf is applied above the scrolls of the handle. The feet of the bowl are reminiscent of Gorhams Narragansett series - in the form of wonderfully modelled seashells.
Marks: underneath are the hallmarks of Gorham Corporation with C STERLING and 10 engraved near the Gorham logo. Alongside is the engraved name of the retailer, Geo C Shreve & CO. with an arrowlike logo.
Condition: good with minor wear commensurate with age.
