More info

Description : A square shaped, hinged locket pendant or fob. The outside is plain gold, but it opens to hold a pair of portraits of loved ones. Loops on diagonal corners suspend a padlock and key on a chain. The lock can only be opened with the aid of the key, so it is a fully working locking system. The pretty key with its heart-shaped head is attached at the end of a very solid chain so that it can reach the padlock and open/close it.

Beautifully made with tight closure when sealed. Very useful for anyone who wants to keep miniature portraits of their loved ones close to their heart. It can be used as a pendant or a fob. Suitable for a man or a woman. It is astonishing that all the parts of this system have stayed together for over 200 years and we can only dream of the people whose portraits were carried here for so many generations.

Marks and Metal: All parts are hallmarked: The key, the loop on the corner of the frame, the lock all have at least 3 hallmarks, including the foliage/leaf mark that indicates small items of 18k gold imported to France 1819-1838. Another mark is possibly the rabbit used as guarantee mark for small items of the same period (too small to see clearly).

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
