Date: the people who sold this brooch assumed it dated to the 19th century. However, there are a number of reasons to believe it dates to the 18th century. In style and feeling it is much like a cufflink with a Greek Cross composed of mixed gems, shown on page 83 of the book on Russian jewelry 16th - 20th century from the collection of the Historical Museum, Moscow. Furthermore, the small hole at the back of the brooch indicates that it might very well have been a cufflink or button before it was converted to a brooch, long ago. The fine, engraved decoration is more typical of 18th than 19th century and the wear/patina of the same, indicates the earlier age.

Marks and Metal: Cyrillic letters on the back. Gold was acid tested as 14k, which is the Russian standard.

Condition: Minor wear commensurate with age and use. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
