Description : In the 18th century, life could not be taken for granted as it is for many of us today. Infant mortality was high, children died and even a common cold could spell disaster. Death was prevalent and a more recognised part of life than today. Mourning jewelry was a big part of appropriate attire and the warning to remember Death - Memento Mori - a common theme.
Center of bezel set with a high rising Stuart crystal, 9 faceted (including the flat table) and set in gold. The crystal encloses a classic skull / death head which gives the name Memento Mori to this type of mourning jewelry. The skull is partially surrounded by a coiled thread of gold.
Back of bezel is radiating cushion shape, typical of early closed Georgian rings. Radiating to the shoulders, set in silver are 4 diamonds, the larger in the middle, the smaller on the sides (two on each side). This is followed by slightly worn modelled silver fern-patterned set within gold hoops.
Marks and Metal: No marks, as expected. Gold was acid tested.
Condition: Wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
