Antique Victorian - Edwardian stick pin. 14k gold and reversed carved crystal. Made circa 1890 - 1910 in England.
Measurements: A tad under 3 1/4 inches long (just over 8 cm). Weighs 6.8 grams. Head of pin is approximately 7/8inches in diameter.
A gold stick pin with spiralling ridge for more secure hold. The head of the pin has a ring of gold globules/beads surrounding a gold frame. Within is a reverse carved intaglio depicting the head of a cat. The carving was done on the inside of a rock crystal dome - hence the name 'reverse carved intaglio'. Silvery grey coat, freckles around mouth. The detail of the carving is spectacular: almost every hair on his/her coat can be seen with a loupe.
Marks: there are no hallmarks, typical of this period. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
Condition: generally good condition with minor wear commensurate with age. The right eye (the cat's left) has lost it's color - see enlarged pictures. Please feel free to ask questions.
Good Essex crystals are highly sought after but there are none as rare as those that depict cats, which hardly ever come onto the market.
