Exraordinary pair of earrings. 22k yellow gold, natural pearls and sapphires. Made in India early 20th century.
Measurements: Main body of earrings, not including the wires approximately 5cm (2inches) long. Length from where wire starts to bottom of chain is over 5 1/2 inches (14cm) long. Combined weight is exactly 14.0grams.
The earrings are amongst the most fascinating antique Indian earrings we have ever seen. The sapphires are of a wonderful deep blue color.
Marks: none, as is to be expected of earrings of this age. Gold was acid tested as 22k.
Condition: good with negligible wear, commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures for details.
These earrings can be worn in a number of ways. They were originally made for people with enormous holes in various areas of the ear lobe. Without compromising the original earrings in any way, they have had wires attached so that a modern woman, with minute ear piercings can comfortably wear them.
The upper part of the earring is a colette-set sapphire attached at the back to a long gold bar and in front to an arching rope-twist, tubular semi-circle. Below this is a pair of pearls (origin/type not known) and these are followed by a large sapphire and then a cluster of smaller sapphires and natural pearls and finally, a natural pearl drop. Behind this is a chain with small natural pearls that swings freely and can be attached to either a part of the ear, another earring or part of the hair. A 3rd extention from the upper sapphire is a very long gold chain with two stretches of sapphires and pearls. Originally, these long chains would be wound up the ear. Again, they can be attached to any other part of the ear, the hair or another earring, or, they can be left to hang down to the wearer's shoulders.
