Description : Carved cameo gryllus in an elaborate gold openwork mount of foliage and fluted scrolls. 5 images in 3 levels are carved from a single agate hardstone. By turning the cameo around 360 degrees, one can see all the images. They depict Jupiter, Venus, Pan and a ram with a shell in the center. The shell and ground are a warm toffee-colored brown and the faces are in the white layer of the stone. Grilli are rare forms of cameo and highly sought after. They depict a number of images or portraits that meld and merge into each other. Nice, clear carving and great use of the color variations of the stone. Very well made mount. C-clasp, typical of the antique period. Possibly replaced pin.

Marks and Metal: No marks, typical of jewelry of this age. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. No chips/cracks to cameo. Gold in good condition. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
