Sentimental Jewelry 2 The Why's - post 176
Antique Jewelry - why do people buy it? Part 2 in a series about Sentimental Antique Jewelry.
Many people today, view the outside world as alarming, to say the least. For this reason, their inner worlds and values are of ever greater relevance to them. People shop for jewelry that has meaning for them. Personal meaning has always been one of the greatest drives behind the purchase of jewelry - the emotional connection is uppermost in a jewelry buyer's mind. Statistics today, show that jewelry is at the top of the luxury items that women want to buy.
Last month, a young man contacted me about a ring for his soon-to-be wife. They had looked at many, many rings and she finally found one, uniquely unconventional as an engagement ring, but an antique ring that reminded her of the ring her Granny wore. This is the piece that makes her heart flutter and she is what makes his heart go boom.
A devoutly religious woman had a bracelet hung with gold crosses, images of the Virgin Mary and a simple little pebble wrapped in gold wire. The lady could afford anything she wanted, but this little piece of the earth had special meaning for her. Perhaps she made a pilgrimage to a holy place; perhaps the stone reminded her of a spiritual event in her life. Every time she looked at the simple little stone, her heart was filled with truly religious awe.
Sentimental antique jewelry was given for a variety of reasons and circumstances. Antique jewelry collectors zoom in on achrostic jewels, memorial jewels, posy rings, Jewish wedding rings, regular wedding and engagement rings, jewelry for lovers illicit, secret or spouses, children - new and lost, friends, hair jewelry. Devotion, both religious and secular are other forms of deep emotion expressed in jewelry. The list goes on and the heart warms.
Antique jewelry, like all antiques, is a concrete or material link between the past and us. It is something to touch, see and feel, something we can look at that belonged to people long ago. If we are lucky, we might inherit a jewel from our own ancestor. We are all highly sentimental about an item that belonged to our grandmothers.
In a way, all gifts are a link to other people, if only a connection between giver and lucky recipient. Often, there is a clear message of love that accompanies the item.
Love, Loss and Devotion. As a species, human beings take pride in the range of emotions we experience. Most psychologists, marketers and many others earn a living thanks to this very human trait. We need to express our feelings, good or bad. One way people have learned to express their emotions is via jewelry. Jewelry is given to those we love, to celebrate those we love and to those we mourn. Jewelry can express our pride and our sense of belonging and serve as a reminder of an event of significance in our lives.
Jewelry expresses our arrogance and our need to show off as well as our aesthetic taste and intellect. Jewelry reminds us of people and events that play an important role in our inner lives and emotions. Antique jewelry in particular, is a strong emotional bond between the wearer and his /her emotional connections.
