Antique Engagement Jewelry

For a long time we have been taught that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Marilyn Munroe did know the value of a good jewel. She was quite right.

For decades, the diamond solitaire has been the traditional engagement ring. Today, well into the 21st century, antique jewelry is a great choice for an engagement gift.

Some people are lucky enough to inherit a beautiful jewel from their ancestors, but this is not the case for the majority of people.

I once stood in a small antique jewelry store and watched as young men, jostled one another to get near the counter. These intelligent young men realized that investing in a classic antique engagement ring is a great option. Often, the relative price of an antique engagement ring is a lot lower than something comparable made today. The quality of the workmanship cannot be equaled. The price is relatively more affordable. Antique jewelry is timeless. It is not going to change in people’s taste, while something current just might. Buying an antique engagement ring is not only a savvy thing to do, it is a symbol of eternity and the timelessness of your relationship.

The single, solitary diamond ring is not the only option when it comes to engagement rings. Today, young people with original and unique taste often go for something quite different. They might chose a solitaire in a brightly colored stone; they might chose a ring with many gems, pearls are very popular (although I don’t think a great choice for everyday wear) and the design chosen could be anything from a cluster ring – think the late Princess Di, to a Georgian garnet. Recently, a very clued-up gentleman bought a classic jade ring surrounded by diamonds for his beloved and when he got on his knee, how could she say anything but 'yes'?  Most sought-after are Edwardian to Art Deco engagement rings. The fine workmanship is a superlative reason for searching out an item like this.

There are many people today who prefer another form of jewelry to a ring. Perhaps the person in question works with their hands or does not like to draw attention to them. In previous centuries, a pair of bangles was given as engagement jewelry. Necklaces and pendants are even more practical.

Men’s engagement jewelry should not be overlooked. Traditionally, women give cufflinks to their future husbands. However, many men like chains, rings and brooches. Yes, brooches!

When choosing an engagement ring, here are a few things to consider. Will she be wearing the ring on a daily basis or for special occasions only? Most metals and settings need to be considered if the former. Will the ring stand up to the bangs and crashes of daily life? Will you need to take off your ring every time you go to the gym or get into the pool? Despite their delicate appearance, platinum rings from the early 20th century are a wonderful choice because the strength of the metal will stand up to quite a lot of punishment.

There are no laws when it comes to people’s differing taste.  Buy antique engagement jewelry that suits you and your partner. Buy something you will enjoy for the duration, which hopefully, will be many, many years. Even more – think ahead to future generations. Who is going to wear your engagement jewelry when you are gone? It is a great solace to consider your legacy can continue when your descendants inherit your antique engagement jewelry.
